Mounjaro® KwikPen (tirzepatide) is a new, highly effective injectable treatment for weight loss, now available in the UK. It is a prescription-only medicine designed to be used alongside a calorie-controlled diet and regular physical activity to help achieve significant and sustainable weight loss.
Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight loss and long-term weight management in adults aged 18 and over.
Mounjaro is prescribed for adults who meet specific eligibility criteria. It is suitable for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classified as obese. It may also be recommended for individuals with a BMI of 27 or more, if they have weight-related health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, or heart disease.

Mounjaro is administered as a once-weekly injection using a pre-filled pen. The treatment follows a structured dosing schedule, starting with a low dose of 2.5mg, which is gradually increased over time. Every four weeks, the dosage is adjusted until the most effective maintenance dose is reached, typically between 5mg and 15mg per week. The injection is given under the skin, usually in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. This gradual approach allows the body to adjust while minimising potential side effects.
Mounjaro is one of the most effective weight loss treatments currently available. Clinical studies have shown that individuals using Mounjaro, alongside a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity, can lose up to 20.9% of their body weight over 36 weeks. Longer-term studies have reported an average weight loss of 25.3% over 88 weeks.
This treatment is designed for long-term weight management, with prescriptions available for up to two years. While some users may notice changes in the early months, the most significant weight loss is typically achieved between 12 and 18 months, depending on dosage, individual response, and lifestyle factors.
Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy are all MHRA-approved for weight loss, but they work in different ways. Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 receptor to help reduce appetite. In contrast, Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. This dual action has been shown to be more effective for weight loss than medications that target only the GLP-1 receptor.

To ensure this treatment is safe and appropriate for you, you must meet specific BMI criteria and complete an online consultation for a comprehensive suitability assessment.
We recommend that you store the Mounjaro KwikPen in the fridge (2 °C – 8 °C) and return it to the fridge after each use. Do not freeze. According to the manufacturer, the Mounjaro KwikPen can be stored unrefrigerated not above 30 ºC for up to 30 days and then the pen must be discarded.
Your first order will include a sharps bin and a special container for safely disposing of used needles. After each injection, carefully place the needle into the sharps bin. Once you’ve finished all 4 doses and removed the needle, the pen itself can be disposed of in your household waste or the sharps bin.
Contact your local council for the sharps bin collection service for safe disposal when your bin is full. You can also purchase additional sharps bins from us when you place new orders for medication.
