Antimalarial Treatment in Maidstone | What to Expect
Before Your Trip
Start your medication regime as directed. This varies by drug type. Doxycycline typically starts 1-2 days before travel, whilst Malarone can be started just 1-2 days before. Some older medications require starting 2-3 weeks in advance.
During Your Trip
Take your tablets at the same time each day. It’s best to take it with food and plenty of water. Doxycycline should be swallowed with plenty of water in a sitting or standing position well before retiring at night to avoid oesophageal irritation.
It should only be taken with food or milk if gastric irritation occurs, as it is generally well-absorbed without it. Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone) should be taken with food or a milky drink at the same time each day to ensure maximum absorption.
If vomiting occurs within one hour of taking it, a repeat dose should be taken. Don’t skip doses, even if you’ve had no mosquito bites.
Combine Medication with Rigorous Bite Prevention
Use insect repellent containing 50% DEET, and sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Always wear long sleeves and trousers after dusk, and use air conditioning or fans when possible.
After Your Trip
Continue taking your tablets for the prescribed period after leaving the malarious zone. This is crucial as the parasites can remain in your bloodstream. Doxycycline should be continued for 4 weeks after leaving a malaria area, while Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil) should be continued for 7 days after leaving a malaria area.
If You Become Unwell
Seek medical attention immediately if you develop fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, or fatigue, particularly within 3 months of returning from a malarious area even if you took antimalarials correctly. Inform healthcare providers about your travel history.
