Planning a trip to Thailand? You’re probably excited about Bangkok temples and Phuket beaches, not thinking about which jabs you need. The reality is Thailand’s tropical climate harbours diseases that simply don’t exist in the UK.

Last year, we vaccinated many Kent residents for Thailand travel. Most were surprised to learn that even luxury resorts in Phuket carry risks. Getting the right vaccines isn’t red tape, it’s about avoiding a Thai hospital when you should be enjoying pad thai.

Cox Heath Pharmacy has been sorting out Thailand vaccinations for Kent residents. We’re at 97 Heath Road in Coxheath, and whether you’re coming from Maidstone, Ashford, or anywhere in Kent, we’ll get you protected properly.

Why We’re Different: Real Thailand Travel Health Expertise

According to NHS Fit for Travel, Thailand travellers should consider vaccines for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Tetanus, and Typhoid, with Japanese Encephalitis selectively advised for those at highest risk[1].

Cox Heath Pharmacy is led by Mandeep Sandhu, our Superintendent Pharmacist. We see backpackers heading to Khao San Road, families going to Koh Samui resorts, and business travellers flying into Bangkok every week. We know the difference. What we do differently:

    • Actually ask where you’re going in Thailand (Chiang Mai mountains need different protection than Bangkok hotels)
    • Explain which vaccines you genuinely need versus which are “nice to have”
    • Stock all the vaccines so you’re not running around to different pharmacies
    • See you same-day when you’ve left it late

Essential Thailand Vaccinations: What You Actually Need

Not everyone needs every vaccine, but some are strongly recommended for Thailand travel.

    Hepatitis A - £50

Thailand has shifted from high to low endemicity for Hepatitis A due to improving sanitation, but sporadic cases still occur through contaminated food and water. That street food you're excited about? That's your risk right there. One jab protects for a year, booster after 6-12 months covers you for life.

    Typhoid - £50

Typhoid fever incidence in Thailand was estimated at 1.13 cases per 100,000 population in 2022, down from 8.6 cases per 100,000 in 2003[3]. Still endemic though, especially if you're eating local. The injection protects for 3 years.

    Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio - £50

Your childhood boosters might be out of date. Tetanus spores are found in soil worldwide, and boosters are recommended where correct treatment of injuries may not be readily available[1]. Rusty nail on the beach? Coral cut while snorkelling? You'll want this protection.

The “Depends Where You’re Going” Vaccines

    Japanese Encephalitis - £110

JE vaccine is recommended for travellers spending ≥1 month in Thailand or those with increased risk due to rural activities[4]. Essential for:

    • Rural areas, especially northern provinces
    • Anywhere near rice paddies
    • Monsoon season travel (May-October)
    • Staying over a month anywhere

    Hepatitis B - £50

Risk is higher where access to adequate sanitation and safe water is limited[1]. Consider if:

    • Staying over a month
    • Might need medical treatment
    • Planning any tattoos
    • Working in healthcare

    Rabies - £85

Government-sponsored mass vaccination campaigns have reduced rabies prevalence in Thailand, but small risk persists[4]. Those temple monkeys look cute until they bite. Essential for:

    • Remote area travel
    • Working with animals
    • Travelling with kids
    • Extended stays

    Special Cases

    Yellow Fever - £65

Required for travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission[1]. Only if coming from Africa/South America.

    Cholera - £80

Rarely needed unless you're doing aid work or visiting refugee areas.

    Disease Risk by Thailand Region

    Higher Risk Areas:

    • Rural provinces near Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos borders
    • Northern mountains during rainy season
    • Rice paddies and agricultural areas

    Lower Risk Areas:

    • Bangkok, Pattaya, major cities
    • Beach resorts (Phuket, Samui, Krabi)
    • Standard tourist circuits

Vaccine timing matters for proper protection and travel convenience.

    • Typhoid: Protected after 7-10 days[3]
    • Japanese Encephalitis: 7 days after SECOND dose[4]
    • Tetanus: Immediate if previously vaccinated[1]

    Multi-dose schedules:

    • Japanese Encephalitis: 2 doses, 28 days apart (can rush to 7 days)
    • Hepatitis B: 3 doses over 6 months (rapid options available)

    • Bit tired: Some people feel slightly run down
    • Mild headache: Occasionally happens

Most people work the next day fine.

Beyond Vaccines: Staying Healthy in Thailand

Vaccines are just part of the story. You’ll also need:

    Mosquito Bite Prevention

Malaria risk exists in forested and hilly areas mainly towards international borders[1]. But dengue and chikungunya are everywhere:
    • DEET 50% repellent – reapply every 4-6 hours
    • Cover up at dawn/dusk
    • Air-con rooms are your friend
    • Bed nets for rural areas

    Food and Water Safety

The CDC’s advice? “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it”
    • No tap water (yes, that includes ice)
    • Street food that’s cooked fresh is usually fine
    • Skip the salads
    • Bottled water for teeth brushing in rural areas<

    Travel Medical Kit

    What we recommend packing:
    • Loperamide (for the runs)
    • Rehydration salts
    • Antihistamines
    • Decent sun cream
    • Basic first aid kit
    • Hand sanitiser
    • Extra prescription meds
