What Is Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness, also called acute mountain sickness (AMS), occurs when your body struggles to adjust to lower oxygen levels at high elevations. Symptoms usually appear above 8,000 feet but can happen lower.
Early planning and proper medication, such as acetazolamide (Diamox) which is used off-label for the prevention of altitude sickness, can prevent complications. It may help reduce the risk of altitude sickness when used as part of a professionally guided prevention plan.
